Our History

Pastor Davis
Spirit of God Fellowship was founded in 1983 by Pastor Victor L. Davis as he was set out by Bryn Jones and John Sullivan of Covenant Ministries International.

At the time of its inception, there were also one other elder, three deacons and approximately 20 members.

After 10 months at our original location (5529 West 5th Avenue) we started with a 4-year mortgage plan that we were blessed abundantly enough to pay off in 2 years.  We then moved to our present location (1010 Roosevelt St.) in 1986.

Two years later, in 1988, Spirit of God Accelerated Education was introduced to the City of Gary. The day-care facility began housing age two through grades K-4.  The elementary school housed K-5 through 6th grades.  In 1993, we built an educational facility that measured 10,000 square feet to accommodate the growing demand. Our next addition, two properties across the street from the school, was acquired in 1996.  These buildings housed our middle school annex and the Rhema House which provided room for our youth group, community outreach and women’s ministries. Other ministries have come forth from the family of people involved here at “Spirit” such as the following:

Spirit of God Technology Center is a computer based after school tutorial program that offers technology training to inner city youth and seniors. Various grants (The City of Gary, IYI & AT&T) have served to make this program a success.

Prison Ministry Teams regularly reach into Michigan City State Prison, Westville Prison, and Lake County Jail.

The Light House of Hope, a live-in facility founded by one of our deacons (Bennie Berry) serves as a transition home for ex-offenders and other people dealing with various forms of substance abuse.

Over the years we have been involved in numerous efforts of community actions (L.I.F.T., and The Interfaith Organization, etc.) which have left a lasting positive impact upon the city  and In His Image: A Young Adult & Youth Group Dance Ministry who focuses on glorifying God through a dynamic dramatic dance and mime troupe. They have produced their first DVD of inspired ministry.

The outreach and ministry vision continues to evolve and the team of workers called to this task increases daily.
